The Last Healthy Choice
Elena stared at her open-palm surgery report, the words blurring through tears she refused to shed. Stage three. The corporate pyramid she'd spent fifteen years climbing suddenly seemed absurd—a monument to ambition that might outlive her.
"You should have come in sooner," Dr. Patel said, not unkindly.
"I was busy," Elena lied. She'd been busy having an affair with Marcus, her direct supervisor. Their lunches had been filled with expensive wine and whispered promises, not spinach salads and preventive screenings.
Now Marcus sat in the waiting room, probably checking his watch, probably regretting the whole thing. Their romance had been another pyramid scheme—her integrity traded for temporary power, both of them knowing someone would eventually lose everything.
The doctor continued explaining treatment options. Elena nodded at appropriate intervals, her mind drifting to last Tuesday when she'd excused herself mid-lunch to throw up in the restaurant bathroom. Marcus had asked if she was pregnant. She'd laughed, spinning some story about food poisoning, because admitting the truth would mean admitting something was wrong. Would mean the game was up.
"Ms. Chen?"
She blinked. Dr. Patel was waiting.
"I need to make a call," she said.
In the hallway, she pressed her phone to her ear with a trembling hand. Marcus answered on the third ring.
"They're keeping me for observation," she said.
"Okay. Should I wait?"
"No. Go back to the office."
"Everything fine?"
Elena looked at her palm again—at the life line that ran shorter than she'd ever noticed. "Fine. Just eat something healthy for lunch today. Maybe spinach."
"Spinach?"
"It's supposed to be good for you."
She ended the call before he could respond. The affair was over. The pyramid had crumbled. And somewhere in the ruins, Elena had to figure out if any part of the life she'd built was actually worth saving.
