The Last Handshake

Elena had been a spy for twelve years, but she'd never felt like one until tonight. The corporate **pyramid** scheme she'd infiltrated had more layers than an onion, and she was peeling them back one compromising email at a time. Her contact sat across the booth, his **palm** sweating against the martini glass as he slid the drive toward her.

"They're **running** out of time," he whispered, eyes darting toward the door. "The whole thing collapses in forty-eight hours."

Elena's own **cat**, Mr. Whiskers, was probably scratching at her apartment door right now, hungry and alone like always. The thought gnawed at her more than it should have. She'd chosen this life—the lying, the secrecy, the perpetual motion—but somewhere along the way, she'd forgotten how to be anything else.

The drive contained evidence that would destroy hundreds of lives. People who believed they were investing in their future, not building someone else's fortune at their expense. Elena had seen it before. The desperation in their eyes when they realized the **pyramid** they'd trusted was just a house of cards.

"What happens to the ones at the bottom?" she asked, not really expecting an answer.

Her contact shrugged. "They always lose. That's how the game works."

Something in Elena shifted. She looked at his hand, the **palm** still damp with condensation and fear, and thought about Mr. Whiskers waiting at home. About the people whose retirement funds would vanish. About the kind of person she'd become.

"Not tonight," she said, sliding the drive back across the table.

His eyes widened. "You're not—you can't—"

"I'm tired of **running** away from who I used to be," Elena said, standing up. "Sometimes the **spy** has to choose which side she's really on."

She walked out into the LA night, palm trees silhouetted against the moon, already calculating the risks of exposing everything. The cat would forgive her for being late. Some things were worth waiting for.
