The Last Goodbye
The morning light filtered through the blinds, casting parallel shadows across Elena's face. She'd been a corporate spy for fifteen years, extracting secrets from competitors' servers, infiltrating their teams, smiling at their children while uploading their roadmaps to the cloud. But this morning, looking at herself in the mirror, she felt nothing. Not guilt, not satisfaction—just the hollow numbness of a creature that kept moving without truly living. A zombie in a tailored suit.
Her phone buzzed. Another job. Another CEO's emails to pilfer, another boardroom to infiltrate. She thought about Marcus, asleep in their bed. He'd stopped asking about her work years ago. Stopped asking anything, really. They moved through the same spaces like ghosts, acknowledging each other's presence with nods and small favors—coffee made, laundry folded—never touching the silence between them.
In the corner, their cat Luna watched Elena with amber eyes, aloof and discerning. Luna didn't care about Elena's lies. She only cared about being fed, and in that way, she was the most honest relationship in Elena's life.
Marcus's dog, Cooper, whined from the bedroom—a loyal creature who still believed in goodness, who still greeted Elena with enthusiasm every time she walked through the door, even when she returned at 3 AM smelling of scotch and other people's perfume. Cooper didn't know she was slowly becoming someone he couldn't trust.
Elena packed her bag. The USB drive with the stolen data was already uploaded. The money would hit her account by midnight. Enough to leave. Enough to finally become someone real.
She wrote a note on the kitchen counter: *I'm sorry. I can't be this person anymore.*
Outside, the world was waking up. People were falling in love, making mistakes, beginning and ending things. Elena walked toward the train station, leaving her keys on the table. For the first time in fifteen years, she wasn't watching anyone. She wasn't hiding anything. She was just a woman walking away from everything she'd built, toward something she couldn't yet name.
Luna blinked at her from the windowsill. Cooper barked once, confused. Elena didn't look back.
