The Last Game

padelspinachsphinx

The padel court echoed with the rhythmic thwack of rubber against fiberglass, a sound that had become the soundtrack to Elena's unraveling marriage. She watched David from the sideline, his back gleaming with sweat as he returned yet another smash to his business partner, Marcus. They played together twice a week now—more time than David spent with her.

Afterward, at the clubhouse restaurant, David ordered the spinach salad with practiced precision. "You've got some..." Marcus reached across, his fingers grazing Elena's lip. "Right there."

David didn't notice. He never noticed anymore.

That night, Elena lay awake beside her husband, his breathing steady and distant. She thought of the Great Sphinx of Giza—a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human, eternally guarding secrets it would never speak. That was David, wasn't it? Powerful, inscrutable, holding riddles she'd spent fifteen years trying to solve.

The next morning, she found the receipt in his pocket. Dinner for two at the clubhouse. Spinach salad for her—she'd never ordered it in her life.

"We need to talk," she said, placing it on the kitchen counter between them.

David looked at the receipt, then at her. Something shifted in his face—not guilt, but relief. Like he'd been waiting for someone to finally ask the right question.

"The sphinx doesn't speak," he said quietly. "It only watches."

"I'm done with riddles, David."

"Then maybe," he said, and for the first time in years, his voice cracked, "you should stop trying to solve them and start listening to the answers that are already there."

Outside, the padel court sat empty in the rain. Tomorrow, David would play again with Marcus. But tonight, in the space between them, something finally broke open—not with violence, but with the terrible clarity of truth spoken aloud. Elena reached across the counter and took his hand. Their fingers touched like strangers'.

"Tell me," she said.

And for the first time, the sphinx began to speak.
