The Last Fiber

cablezombiepalm

The coaxial cable lay coiled like a dead snake on her apartment floor, its copper heart finally severed. Elena stared at it, the same hollow exhaustion in her chest that had been growing for months. She'd become a zombie of her own making—moving through marketing meetings and dinner dates, smiling when expected, consuming and regurgitating the same hollow phrases about synergy and reach.

'This isn't working,' Daniel had said last night, not unkindly. 'You're not here. Even when you're here.' He'd pressed his palm against her cheek, his thumb finding the faint pulse at her jaw, as if checking she was still alive.

She hadn't been able to promise him she would be.

Now she sat cross-legged on the hardwood, the apartment silent except for the refrigerator's hum. No notifications. No emails. No endless scroll through other people's curated lives. Just her and the dismembered cable and the sudden terrifying quiet.

Her palm pressed flat against the floor, fingers splaying against the cool wood. Grounding. Something the therapist had suggested. Feel what's real.

What was real?

The grief pressing against her ribs like a second heartbeat. The way Daniel's smell still lingered on the pillow he'd used Tuesday night. The terrifying possibility that beneath all the performance and exhaustion, there might still be something worth finding.

Elena stood up, the cable forgotten on the floor. She walked to the window, where her palm tree died slowly in its pot, brown fronds drooping toward the street below. She'd forgotten to water it again. Or maybe she'd just stopped caring whether things lived or died.

She picked up her phone, severed from the world now, and turned it over in her hands. Then she walked to the kitchen, filled a glass with water, and carried it to the palm tree. The water soaked into the dry soil, dark and welcome.

Maybe tomorrow she'd call Daniel. Maybe she wouldn't. But for the first time in months, Elena wanted to see what happened next.
