The Last Dive

The hotel pool was empty at 3 AM, which was exactly why Elena chose it. She'd spent the entire day **swimming** through other people's bullshit—boardroom posturing, strategic silence, the kind of corporate theater that made her skin feel tight and itchy.

Now, slicing through the chlorinated water, she could finally breathe.

Until she saw him.

David sat on the pool's edge, legs dangling in the water, watching her with that **sphinx**-like expression she'd grown to both fear and crave in their three years together. His face gave away nothing, but his eyes tracked every stroke, every surfaced breath.

She stopped at the pool's edge, resting her arms on the cool tile. "Couldn't sleep?"

"Could ask you the same thing." His voice was rougher than usual. "You've been avoiding me all week."

Elena slicked back her wet **hair**, suddenly conscious of the chlorine stripping away her makeup, her carefully curated armor. "I've been busy, David. The merger—"

"Bullshit." The word dropped like a stone between them. "You've been swimming around whatever this is for months. But you can't keep avoiding it forever."

She felt something snap inside her—the delicate tension she'd been maintaining, the careful balance of pretending nothing had changed. "What do you want me to say, David? That I know you're **bull**-shitting yourself about us? That I can feel you pulling away while pretending everything's fine?"

His expression cracked. Just for a moment, but she saw it—fear, exhaustion, the same weariness she felt.

"I'm not pretending," he said quietly. "I'm just trying to figure out if there's anything left worth fighting for."

Elena pulled herself out of the water, dripping and shivering in the air conditioning. She sat beside him, their shoulders barely touching, both staring at the blank black rectangle of the pool's surface.

"I don't know," she said, and it was the truest thing she'd spoken in months. "But we can't find out sitting here in the dark."

David took her hand, his fingers warm against her cold skin. For the first time in a long time, neither of them looked away.
