The Last Call from Paradise

The palm fronds above her hotel balcony rattled in the Costa Rican breeze, a sound that was supposed to be soothing but just reminded Elena of everything she'd left unfinished. She checked her iphone for the seventh time that hour—no new messages. The group chat from work had gone silent the moment she'd booked her one-way ticket.

"You're making a mistake," her boss had said, his face slack with disbelief. "You'll be back. They always come back."

She touched the screen anyway, her thumb hovering over her ex-wife's contact. Sarah had left six months ago, citing Elena's emotional unavailability. "You're like sleeping next to a zombie," she'd said during the final fight. "You go through the motions, but nothing reaches you anymore."

Elena had protested then, but here in paradise, she couldn't deny it. She felt hollowed out, automated. Wake up. Check phone. Feel nothing meaningful. Repeat.

A small dog trotted onto her balcony then—a scrawny, golden thing with one ear that stood at attention and another that flopped over its eye. It nudged her bare foot with a wet nose.

"Go away," she whispered, but her voice lacked conviction.

The dog lay down instead, resting its chin on her instep. And something strange happened: Elena's chest tightened. Not in the panicked way it did when work email piled up, but in a way that felt almost like memory. Like grief, or hope, or something else she'd forgotten how to name.

She set the iphone on the table. Screen down.

"Okay," she said to the dog. "Okay."

The dog thumped its tail against the floor tiles, a steady, alive rhythm. Elena closed her eyes and listened. For the first time in years, she didn't check to see what she was missing. She let herself simply be there—a beginning, however small, of something that might, eventually, feel like living again.
