The Last Call

Maya stood on the deck of the lake house, her baseball cap pulled low against the drizzle. The corporate retreat had been three days of forced camaraderie and strategic positioning, and she was exhausted. She was a spy, technically—hired by a competitor to gather intel on this biotech firm's latest breakthrough. But somehow, along the way, she'd started caring about the people she was supposed to betray.

Her iPhone buzzed in her pocket. A message from her handler: *Package complete. Extract tonight.*

She stared at the water, dark and churning beneath the gray sky. She'd come here with a plan, a simple in-and-out operation. Then she'd met Sarah, the lead researcher, over drinks at the bar. Sarah with her laugh that sounded like rain on a tin roof. Sarah who'd talked about her work like it was poetry, something that could change lives.

"Bear with me," Sarah had said last night, leaning in close, "but I think you're the only person here who actually listens."

Maya had almost told her everything. Almost.

Now she stood at the edge of everything—her career, her conscience, this strange thing that might be love if she let it. The client was paying her enough to disappear. All she had to do was walk away.

Her phone lit up again. Sarah: *Meet me at the dock?*

Maya's fingers hovered over the screen. She could delete the messages, wipe the stolen data, walk into that lake house and pretend she'd never been anyone but Maya from marketing. Or she could complete the mission, collect her payment, and add another ghost to the collection of people she used to be.

She pulled off her hat and let the rain wet her hair. Some things, once seen, couldn't be unseen. Some betrayals, once committed, couldn't be forgiven.

She typed back: *On my way.*

Then she deleted her handler's message, stepped off the deck, and walked toward the only thing that felt real anymore.
