The Last Cable

Marcus sat by the hotel pool at 2 AM, nursing whiskey he'd stolen from the mini-bar, watching the water ripple in the artificial breeze. The corporate retreat had been a disaster from the start—his presentation tanked, and he'd spent the evening avoiding Sarah, the fox in HR who'd been circling him since his promotion was announced.

She'd cornered him earlier at the open bar. 'You must be exhausted, Marcus,' she'd purred, her hand lingering on his arm. 'All that pressure to perform.' He'd mumbled something and fled, leaving her to chat up the CFO instead.

Now he fumbled with the cable connecting the room's ancient TV to the wall jack. It had been dangling loose all week, like his marriage had been for the past six months. Denise had finally packed her bags yesterday morning, leaving nothing but a note: 'I can't bear this emptiness anymore.'

He'd always thought it was the house that felt empty, but it was him.

The whiskey burned going down. He couldn't stop seeing it: Denise in their kitchen last Sunday, making breakfast like nothing was wrong, her face serene even as she planned her exit. Had she been a fox all along, playing him while he stayed clueless? Or had they both been bears hibernating through years of quiet disappointment?

His phone buzzed—Sarah again, suggesting they 'discuss strategy' over room service. He muted it.

The cable finally snapped into place. The TV flickered to life: nature documentary, a mother bear fishing in a crystal-clear pool, her cub watching intently from the shore. Natural, instinctive, nothing hidden.

Marcus turned off the TV. Outside his door, he heard Sarah's heels clicking down the hall, getting closer.

He lay back on the stale sheets and closed his eyes. Tomorrow he'd call Denise. Tomorrow he'd quit the job that had become everything. But tonight, in the darkness, he finally felt something real.
