The Last Asset

zombiebearpyramidspy

Elena hadn't felt like herself in three years. Not since the Agency's最后一次 memory wipe left her hollowed out, walking through life like some corporate zombie—functional but empty, smiling at strangers with teeth that didn't feel like hers anymore.

The cabin in Montana was supposed to be her exit strategy. Just her, the snow, and distance from everyone who'd ever used her as a weapon.

Then the bear found her.

She'd been chopping wood when she heard the crash, saw the massive grizzly emerge through the pines. It stood on its hind legs, seven feet of muscle and fur, studying her with intelligence that unsettled something deep inside her cracked chest.

"You're not supposed to be awake yet," she whispered, though her tactical training screamed to reach for the pistol holstered beneath her jacket. Instead, she stood frozen, captivated by the raw life in those amber eyes.

The bear dropped to all fours and ambled away, indifferent to her existential crisis. But in that moment, something broke open inside her—a dam against three years of numbness.

That night, the burner phone buzzed. A text from a number she'd memorized then burned: THE PYRAMID NEEDS YOU. ONE LAST JOB.

Her handler. The man who'd ordered her final wipe.

Elena stared at the message, the old life pulling at her like gravity. She'd been their best spy, their perfect weapon, until they'd decided she knew too much—even about herself.

Outside, the bear huffed in its den somewhere in the darkness. Alive. Wild. Unowned.

She threw the phone into the woodstove and watched it melt. For the first time in three years, when she cried, she meant it.
