The Lake's Magical Friend
Lily and Max loved spending their summer days at Crystal Lake. The water sparkled like diamonds under the golden sun, and the air smelled of fresh grass and adventure.
One afternoon, while running along the sandy shore, Lily spotted something strange near the old willow tree. A slow-moving figure shuffled through the reeds, its arms stretched forward like it was sleepwalking.
"It's a zombie!" Max whispered, grabbing Lily's hand. "My brother said zombies live in dark places."
Lily's heart thumped, but she was also curious. The zombie didn't look scary—just lonely. Its green skin shimmered like pond moss, and its eyes were sad and gentle.
"Wait," Lily said, pulling away from Max. "Let's watch first."
The zombie reached the water's edge and stopped. Instead of looking for brains, it sat down and began splashing its feet in the cool water. Then something magical happened—it started swimming! But not like regular swimming. The zombie glided through the lake like a graceful fish, doing happy somersaults and blowing bubbles that turned into tiny rainbows in the sunlight.
"That's the most beautiful swimming I've ever seen!" Lily exclaimed.
The zombie heard them and froze, looking embarrassed. It climbed out of the water, dripping wet.
"We're not scared," Lily called softly. "We're just surprised."
The zombie's face lit up. "I'm Zelly," it said in a voice like rustling leaves. "Everyone runs away because they think I'm scary. But I just love water. In my old village, the lake dried up, and I've been searching for a new home ever since."
Max stepped forward. "You can stay here! This lake has plenty of water for swimming."
Zelly's mossy skin turned a happy shade of pink. "Really?"
"Really!" Lily said. "And we'll teach you our favorite water games."
That summer, the children learned something important: sometimes, the things we fear are just friends we haven't met yet. And Zelly learned that running away from people wasn't necessary when they were willing to understand.
Every sunset, if you visit Crystal Lake, you might spot a green figure doing joyful backflips in the water, surrounded by splashing children and rainbow bubbles. The zombie who loved swimming had finally found her home—and her friends.
