The Kale Incident
Maya stood in front of her bathroom mirror, phone propped up against the toothbrush holder. On TikTok, @fitgirl_chloe was demonstrating her morning routine—something about alkaline water being life-changing. Maya was three weeks into her summer glow-up era, attempting to transform herself from band camp regular to someone who might actually catch Jason's attention when sophomore year started.
She'd already swapped her usual chocolate pop-tarts for some questionable green powder that claimed to be a superfood vitamin blend. Her younger brother, Leo, had watched her choke it down that morning and immediately started making gagging noises from the doorway.
"That looks like swamp water," he'd announced before their mom could shush him.
Now Maya was attempting to make a smoothie that wouldn't taste like lawn clippings. The recipe called for water, not juice, because @fitgirl_chloe said juice had too much sugar. Maya measured it carefully, trying to ignore how her stomach already hurt from whatever was in that green powder.
She added the spinach last, watching it settle in the blender like something that belonged in a garden, not a drink. Her phone buzzed—Jason had posted a story. He was at the pool with his friends, looking annoyingly perfect even through the grainy screenshot.
Maya pressed blend.
The sound was violent. The blender jumped. Her mom poked her head in: "Everything okay in here?"
"Fine! Just... making a smoothie!"
When she finally poured it into a mason jar because aesthetics, it looked like something you'd clean a pool with. Maya stared at it. This wasn't her. Maya was the girl who hid in the library during lunch, who played trumpet, who ate actual food with actual taste.
She poured it down the sink. The water swirled green, taking all her pretend with it.
Her phone buzzed again. Jason had replied to her comment on his post—just a "haha thanks" but it made her stomach do something the green powder never could.
Maybe she'd just wear the cute swimsuit she bought. Maybe that was enough glow-up for now.
Leo wandered into the kitchen. "You done with your health phase? Can I have the last pop-tart?"
Maya laughed. "Yeah. Go for it."
Some things weren't worth changing.
