The iPhone's Secret Door

Lily loved her old iphone. It had belonged to her grandmother, and even though the screen was cracked and it didn't make calls anymore, Lily kept it safe in her pillowcase. Every night, she'd trace the cracks like constellations.

One Tuesday, while Lily was running through the park after school, something extraordinary happened. Her iphone buzzed in her pocket—not a normal buzz, but a warm, tingling feeling, like a tiny heartbeat.

She pulled it out, and the screen wasn't black anymore. It glowed with golden light, and suddenly, a tiny creature popped out! He was no bigger than Lily's thumb, with emerald scales and wings like a dragonfly.

"I'm Padel!" the creature squeaked. "And you've unlocked the magic!"

"The what?" Lily asked, her eyes wide.

"The magic inside your iphone!" Padel did a happy flip in the air. "Your grandmother left me here. I've been waiting for someone with enough imagination to set me free!"

Lily's grandmother had always told stories about magical things hiding in plain sight. "Where do we go?"

Padel landed on her nose. "Anywhere! Hold up your iphone and spin around!"

Lily held up the glowing phone and twirled. The world blurred into colors—then suddenly, she wasn't in the park anymore. She stood in a meadow where the grass hummed with songs and flowers changed colors when she smiled.

"Welcome to the In-Between!" Padel cheered. "This is where imagination lives!"

They spent what felt like minutes (but was probably hours) running through candy cane forests, dancing with cloud-people, and sliding down rainbows. But eventually, Padel's wings began to droop.

"What's wrong?" Lily asked.

"The In-Between needs imagination to stay alive," Padel whispered. "Children used to visit here all the time, but now everyone's too busy with their phones to imagine anything at all. Our world is fading."

Lily looked at her iphone, still glowing in her hand. She understood now. Her grandmother hadn't left her the phone to play games—she'd left it as a reminder.

"I'll come back," Lily promised. "And I'll bring my friends. We'll imagine so many stories that the In-Between will shine brighter than ever!"

Padel's wings lifted. "Promise?"

"Promise."

When Lily opened her eyes, she was back in the park. Her iphone looked ordinary again, but when she held it to her ear, she could hear Padel's tiny voice: "See you soon, Lily."

That night, Lily didn't trace the screen cracks like constellations. She drew them instead—pictures of Padel, the candy cane forest, and all the magical places she would visit again in her dreams.

And sometimes, when she was running through the park, she'd feel that warm tingle in her pocket, reminding her that magic was never far away—as long as she remembered to look for it.
