The Instagram Stakeout
I was seventeen and convinced my entire life would be perfect if my hair would just cooperate for once. Instead, I was walking down Maple Street with Barnaby—my neighbor's ancient, farting golden retriever—pretending to be a casual dog walker when really I was a full-blown spy.
My target: Tyler's bedroom window. Second floor, curtains partially open, that soft blue light that meant only one thing—Instagram Live.
"Barnaby, you're literally the worst undercover partner," I whispered as he decided now was the perfect time to sniff a mailbox for thirty-seven straight years. "Could you pretend to be cool? Just for like, five minutes?"
My hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Instead, thanks to a TikTok tutorial that definitely lied about "beginner friendly," I was rocking what my mom politely called "an unfortunate situation." My ponytail looked like a died sunburst exploded on my head. Tyler would never look at me twice like this.
But then—BARNABY SAW something.
The dog perked up, tail wagging like he'd just been promised an entire pizza. I looked where he was staring and—NO. ACTUAL NO. Tyler was coming outside.
My brain short-circuited. Do I run? Do I pretend I'm not here? Do I—
"Hey!" he called, jogging over. "Is that Barnaby?"
"Uh, yeah?" I said, suddenly very aware that my hair catastrophe was visible from space. "I'm watching him for Mrs. Henderson."
"Cool, cool." Tyler scratched behind Barnaby's ears. "I saw your story earlier. That dye job looks sick."
My brain stopped working. "Wait, what?"
"Your hair," he said, like it was obvious. "I was gonna comment but didn't wanna be weird. It looks really cool. Different."
I stood there, holding Barnaby's leash, realizing that my seventeen-year-old drama brain had invented an entire tragedy where Tyler thought my hair was a disaster zone when actually—maybe—I was just overthinking everything.
"Thanks," I managed, and for the first time, I didn't hate my hair.
Barnaby, the genius dog that he was, chose that moment to pee on Tyler's lawn.
"Dude!" Tyler laughed. "Uncalled for!"
But he was still smiling. At me.
And I realized my spy mission had succeeded—not because I'd uncovered any secrets, but because I'd finally stopped spying from afar and actually showed up.
