The Instagram Spy Mission

Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Instead, it came out orange. Like, full-on traffic cone orange.

"It's... bold," her best friend Chloe said, barely keeping a straight face as they stared at the bathroom mirror.

"Bold?" Maya groaned. "It looks like a Cheeto exploded on my head. Everyone's gonna stare tomorrow at school."

Chloe's phone buzzed. She stared at the screen, suddenly unreadable.

"What?"

"Nothing." Chloe locked the phone way too fast.

Maya narrowed her eyes. "Since when do you hide stuff from me? We tell each other everything."

Chloe sighed. "Okay, fine. But you can't get mad."

"Spill."

"A bunch of people were already talking about you on insta. I was just... checking."

"Spying on my mentions?"

"It's not spying if you're protecting your friend!" Chloe defended. "Anyway, someone posted that you were getting highlights done and people were making bets on whether you'd cry or not."

Maya felt her chest tighten. Suddenly the orange hair wasn't just bad — it was public humiliation.

Her cat, Luna, chose that moment to weave through her legs, purring like a motor. At least Luna didn't care what people said on social media.

Maya looked in the mirror again. Really looked. Okay, the orange was intense. But kind of cool? Different. Like she'd stopped trying to fit into someone else's perfect aesthetic.

"You know what?" Maya said, grabbing her phone. "Let them look."

She posted a selfie — orange hair, no filter, Luna making a cameo in the corner. Caption: "Traffic cone chic. What of it?"

Chloe gasped. "You're actually posting it?"

"Why not?" Maya shrugged. "If they're gonna talk, might as well give them something real."

By third period, her phone was blowing up. Not with mean comments, but with people asking for her stylist's info. Someone even started a hashtag: #OrangeHairDontCare.

"I can't believe you just owned it," Chloe said at lunch. "I was literally spying on haters while you were out here being an icon."

Maya laughed, touching her orange hair. "Turns out the best glow-up is just giving exactly zero vibes about what anyone thinks."

Luna would be proud.
