The Instagram Disaster
Maya's hands were literally shaking as she held her iphone over the spinach dip. Perfect lighting. Perfect angle. Three, two, one—
"Did you just post that?" Chloe whispered, eyes wide. "Without asking?"
"It's fine," Maya said, but her stomach did that thing it always did when something felt wrong. Like when you post a pic and immediately want to delete it but can't because that's admitting defeat.
The pool party was supposed to be her moment. Eighth grade, finally invited to the cool kids' thing, everything aligned. She'd spent forty minutes on her hair. Her makeup was flawless. Her swimsuit was from that expensive store everyone Instagrammed about.
But then came the spinach dip incident.
"Maya," Chloe said, barely holding it together. "You have... like... spinach in your teeth. Everywhere."
The horror. The absolute, soul-crushing horror. And she'd JUST posted that selfie.
"You didn't tell me BEFORE I posted?" Maya hissed, rushing toward the bathroom.
"I was distracted! That dip is actually fire!"
Maya locked herself in the bathroom and stared in the mirror. Yup. Green bits everywhere. Her life was over. This was it. The social equivalent of death.
Then she heard it—a huge splash, followed by screaming.
She unlocked the door to chaos. Someone had pushed someone else into the pool. Full-on swimming chaos, phones and clothes flying everywhere. Chloe was cackling, hair dripping wet, pushing some guy who was laughing so hard he could barely stand.
"MAYA!" Chloe yelled. "GET IN HERE!"
Something in Maya shifted. The perfect moment was already ruined. Her Instagram was already cursed with spinach teeth. Why not?
She jumped in, phone clutched above her head like an idiot, and surfaced to everyone laughing at the irony: the girl who'd been so worried about her perfect post was now the one creating the most chaotic energy of the night.
Her phone survived (barely). The picture got 47 likes and a comment that said "real"—which, honestly, was better than perfect anyway.
Sometimes the best moments are the ones you can't plan. The ones where you just have to bear it and jump in anyway.
