The Instagram Detective

iphonepadelspy

Maya had become a professional at the art of digital reconnaissance. Every morning, she'd grab her iPhone from the nightstand and immediately start her daily briefing — scrolling through Fin's Instagram stories, analyzing every post, every tagged photo, every inside joke that felt like it was written in a language she hadn't learned yet.

"You're basically a spy at this point," her best friend Priya had said earlier that week, catching Maya in yet another deep dive into Fin's social media. "But like, a sad one. The FBI doesn't even pay you."

Maya had rolled her eyes, but Priya wasn't wrong. There was something pathetic about analyzing whether Fin's post about padel at the new club was a subtle invitation or just content.

Then came the text that made her phone practically vibrate off her desk.

*Hey, some of us are playing padel tomorrow at the club. Want to join?*

Maya stared at the screen until her vision blurred. This was it. The infiltration phase was complete. Operation Be Friends With Fin had moved to Phase Two.

The next day, standing on the court with a borrowed racket, Maya realized two things: one, padel was way harder than it looked on Instagram, and two, she was catastrophically overthinking this.

"Your form's actually pretty decent," Fin said, after Maya somehow managed to hit the ball without embarrassing herself. "You play?"

"I mean, I used to play tennis," Maya said, then immediately regretted it. Why had she said that? She sounded like she was trying to qualify for the sport.

"Cool," Fin said, and Maya couldn't tell if they were being nice or actually meant it. That was the worst part about all of this — the uncertainty that kept her spying, searching for clues, desperate for something that felt concrete.

An hour later, sweaty and surprisingly sore, Maya found herself sitting with Fin and their friends at the club's cafe. Her iPhone sat face-down on the table, silent for what might be the first time in weeks.

"You're funny," Fin said, after Maya made a joke about her questionable athletic abilities. "Why don't you ever talk in English? You're always so quiet."

The question caught her off guard. "I don't know. I guess I'm just... observing."

"Spying?" Fin grinned.

Maya felt her face get hot. "Something like that."

"Well, you can stop now," Fin said, pushing a smoothie toward her. "You're in."

That night, Maya opened Instagram out of habit. She started to scroll through Fin's page, then stopped. What was she looking for? She'd spent so long watching from the outside that she'd forgotten how to just... experience things.

She closed the app and opened her notes instead. *Tomorrow: text Priya. Ask if she wants to learn padel.*
