The Hungry Garden Ghost
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially in the golden hour before dinner. One evening, while her mom was distracted on a call, Lily sneaked outside with an old iPhone she'd found in a drawer. She didn't have a phone number, but she loved using the flashlight app to peek under bushes and behind flowers.
That's when she saw him—a sad, shuffling figure near the oak tree. He looked like a zombie from movies, with pale skin and slow movements. But instead of feeling scared, Lily felt curious. He was glowing faintly in the twilight, and when he spotted her, his eyes lit up with recognition instead of hunger.
"You can see me!" he gasped. "I'm Barnaby, and I've been stuck like this for weeks."
Barnaby explained that he was a garden gnome who had been cursed by a grumpy squirrel. The curse made him feel tired and "zombie-like," but the old iPhone's light had broken the spell enough for Lily to see him. He needed magical vitamins from the moonflowers to return to normal.
Lily shone the iPhone's light toward the trellis where moonflowers climbed. The beam revealed glowing berries among the blossoms—magical vitamins that sparkled like tiny stars.
"Moonberry treats," Barnaby whispered. "The perfect cure."
Together, they collected the berries in Lily's pocket. As Barnaby ate each one, color returned to his cheeks and energy to his steps. By the time he finished, he was dancing on the oak tree's roots, no longer zombie-like at all.
"Thank you, Lily," Barnaby said, reaching into his pocket. "Here—for your kindness, a special vitamin of my own." He handed her a small, glowing stone that would help plants grow wherever she planted it.
Lily hid the stone in her pocket and returned the iPhone to the drawer. That night, she dreamed of moonflowers and magical cures, knowing that even the saddest zombies just need the right friends—and the right vitamins—to become their best selves again.
