The Human Pyramid Strategy

The chlorine smell hit Maya before she even saw the pool. Behind her, Jenna's iphone 14 buzzed with a stream of TikTok notifications neither of them bothered checking. This was the party that supposedly mattered—the one where the freshman social pyramid allegedly got rearranged.

"You're not seriously going in there," Jenna said, gesturing at the chaos of screaming teenagers. "Human pyramid attempts are how people get concussions."

Maya adjusted her bikini straps, suddenly hyper-aware of how everyone seemed to know exactly what they were doing. The popular kids were already in the water, forming the base of something that looked structurally doomed.

"Five minutes," Maya said. "Just swim, look chill, leave. That's the strategy."

"Your strategies are terrible," Jenna called, but Maya was already walking toward the pool.

The water was colder than expected, shocking her senses as she slipped in. Around her, people laughed and shoved each other with practiced ease. Then she heard it—someone calling her name.

"Maya! Perfect timing! We need one more for the middle row!"

It was Tyler, who'd sat behind her in bio since September. His hair dripped into his eyes, and there was something weirdly genuine about how he wasn't performing for the crowd.

The pyramid wobbled dangerously. Someone at the bottom cursed as a foot slipped. Without thinking, Maya found herself swimming toward them, positioning herself between Tyler's shoulders and the girl above her.

"Ready?" someone shouted.

They held it. For three seconds, they held a perfect, ridiculous human pyramid that defied physics and common sense. Then, predictably, it collapsed—amidst screams and laughter, Maya found herself underwater, tangled limbs and iphone drifting to the bottom in slow motion.

When she surfaced, gasping, everyone was laughing. Including her. Jenna stood poolside, capturing it all on story.

"Your strategy," Jenna yelled over the noise, "was to look chill and leave early, right?"

Maya flipped wet hair from her face, grinning. "Plans changed."

Maybe social pyramids weren't so rigid after all. Sometimes you just had to jump in the water and see where you landed.
