The Honest Selfie

Maya's bedroom was practically a photography studio at this point. Ring light glowing, tripod positioned just so, her iphone mounted like it was about to capture something profound instead of just—her. Being fifteen in the era of curated perfection was exhausting.

"You ready, Maya-bear?" her mom called from downstairs, using the childhood nickname that somehow still survived despite Maya's increasingly dramatic protests.

"Almost!" Maya adjusted her beanie—her signature hat, the one she'd spent twenty minutes positioning to look effortless instead of carefully planned. Today was the day. The group photo. Jordan's party. Everyone who mattered would be there, and if she didn't post something that hit the vibe just right, did she even exist?

Her stomach growled. She'd barely eaten all day, too nervous about the outfit, the hair, the performance. She grabbed a handful of spinach from the salad her mom had prepared—organic, local, everything Maya pretended not to care about but secretly appreciated—and shoved it in her mouth.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up already. People posting pre-game selfies. Filters flying. She checked her teeth in the mirror. Spinach. Of course. A tiny green shard wedged right in front, like some cosmic joke about how nothing could ever be easy.

She almost panicked. Almost grabbed her phone to frantically fix it, to document this disaster before fixing it, to turn even this into content.

Then she paused.

The stuffed bear from her childhood sat on her dresser, its fur matted from years of hugs, one eye slightly loose. She hadn't touched it in ages, but somehow it was still there, watching her with that wonky, patient gaze.

Maya laughed. Actually laughed.

She took the selfie—spinach and all. Posted it with the caption: "this is fine i'm fine"

The responses were instant. Not the usual vague compliments, but actual laughter. Real laughter. Jordan commented: "finally something real on this feed"

Maybe fifteen didn't have to be a performance. Maybe she could just... exist.

"MAYA-BEAR! Jordan's here!"

"Coming!" She grabbed a different hat. Left the spinach. Picked up the bear.
