The Hierarchy of Leaving

The presentation sat on her desk like a monument to failure—a perfect little pyramid of corporate buzzwords and quarterly projections. Elena stared at it through blurred vision, wondering how she'd spent fifteen years climbing toward something that felt increasingly like nothing.

She wasn't running late. She was running toward something, though she couldn't name it yet. The divorce papers sat in her bag, heavy as a stone. Daniel had moved out three weeks ago, leaving behind his half-finished coffee mug and that damn cat.

Barnaby—Daniel's cat—had chosen Elena over him. The animal now watched her from the kitchen counter with judging yellow eyes as she stood over a skillet, wilting spinach into something that looked remarkably like the slow collapse of her life. She'd always hated spinach. Daniel had loved it. Now she ate it every night, some perverse act of penance or ownership.

The corporate pyramid awaited her ascent. Her boss had made it clear: the next promotion was hers if she wanted it. More meetings, more projections, more layers of hierarchy to climb. She'd stopped caring three months ago, around the time she realized Daniel's phone was always face-down and password-protected, around the time she found herself driving past their old apartment at 2 AM, running from the emptiness of her new one.

Barnaby jumped onto the counter and knocked the spinach container onto the floor. It shattered, green leaves scattering like confetti at a funeral.

"That's it," she said.

She left the spinach where it fell. She left the pyramid on her desk. She grabbed her bag, keys, and the cat, and walked out into the humid night air. No destination. No plan. Just forward motion, finally feeling like running toward something instead of away.
