The Hierarchical Trap

Maya's iPhone illuminated her face at 2:47 AM, casting ghostly blue light across her cubicle as the cryptic message from Marcus pulsed on her screen: "They know about the Cairo account."

She stared at the words until they blurred, the办公室 silence broken only by the building's hum and occasional traffic from below. Her thumb hovered over the screen, trembling slightly, before she heard the soft shuffle of paws.

Barnaby—the stray cat who'd adopted the office building—materialized from the shadows, weaving between her ankles before leaping onto her desk. His calico fur glowed under the desk lamp. He began kneading a pile of discarded reports, purring loudly.

"You're the only one who doesn't want something from me," she whispered, scratching behind his ears. Barnaby's golden eyes closed in bliss.

The floor beneath her desk was a snake pit of cables—power cords, ethernet lines, the charger she'd yanked from the wall in frustration earlier. They lay tangled like her thoughts: impossible to follow back to their source.

Seven years she'd climbed this corporate pyramid, each promotion a new level of isolation. VP of Regional Operations by thirty-five, drowned in spreadsheets and schemes, the architect of her own loneliness. Marcus had been her escape attempt—brief, dangerous, now ending in blackmail and threats.

Barnaby's purring stopped as he fixed his unblinking gaze on her. Outside, the first traces of dawn grayed the sky.

Maya's fingers found the phone again. Not to call Marcus, but to transfer everything—the documents, the evidence, the truth about the pyramid scheme masquerading as regional expansion—to a secure drive she'd hidden months ago.

"Burn it all down," she murmured, and Barnaby blinked, as if in agreement.

The cables would trip someone eventually. Better it be her, on her own terms.
