The HDMI Rescue
Maya's hair was doing that thing again—that full-on rebellion where it looked like a bird's nest after a hurricane. She stood in front of her bathroom mirror, contemplating the tragic reality that her crush, Alex, would see her at Jordan's party in exactly forty-seven minutes.
The beanie hat was supposed to be her emergency backup plan. She pulled it down low, hiding the disaster underneath. Not her finest moment, but desperate times called for desperate measures.
Her phone buzzed. Jordan: <<u forgot the HDMI cable bro it's a movie night>>
Maya stared at her screen. The HDMI cable. The one thing standing between a successful party and total social catastrophe. Everyone would be there—Alex included—and if the movie didn't work, Maya would officially be the friend who ruined everything. Again.
She grabbed the spare cable from her dad's office and practically sprinted to Jordan's house, the beanie flopping with every step. Her hair situation was getting progressively worse under there, but priorities.
When she burst through the door, breathless and cable-wielding, she found Alex already there, leaning against the wall with that effortless cool that made Maya's stomach do somersaults.
"You're a lifesaver," Jordan said, grabbing the cable like it was the Holy Grail.
Maya's beanie caught on something as she tried to casually lean against the doorframe. The whole thing came off in one catastrophic motion, revealing her hair in all its chaotic glory—frizzy, tangled, and very much not party-ready.
The room went silent.
Alex pushed off the wall and walked over. "Your hair looks sick, honestly. Mine does that exact same thing when I don't use conditioner for three days."
Maya blinked. "Really?"
"No joke. It's got personality." Alex grinned. "Unlike Jordan's setup, which was about to fail spectacularly without you."
Jordan was already connecting the cable. "Okay, but for real though—thank you. This party would've been a major flop without the entertainment."
As the movie started and everyone found spots on the couch, Maya ended up squished between Alex and a bowl of popcorn, her wild hair free and uncovered. Maybe the disaster look wasn't so terrible after all.
