The Hats We Wear

Elena stared at the wilted spinach on her breakroom plate, watching steam rise and dissipate like her own ambition. At thirty-two, she'd already accumulated more hats than she could count: dutiful daughter, reliable employee, patient girlfriend,未来 homeowner someday. Each one heavier than the last.

The office hummed with the particular frequency of the walking dead. Her coworkers moved through the open floor plan like zombies—eyes glazed, fingers flying across keyboards, souls slowly eroding by fluorescent light. Elena felt it too, the hollowing out, the gradual transformation into something that performed life rather than lived it.

"You going to eat that?"

She looked up. Marcus from accounting stood there, holding his own sad container of leftover takeout. They'd dated briefly in college, before life equipped them with their respective hats.

"Probably not," she said. "Trying to be healthy. Failing, obviously."

He laughed, and it was the most genuine sound she'd heard in weeks. "We're all just zombies force-feeding ourselves spinach, hoping it'll make us feel alive again."

The raw truth of it landed between them. For a moment, Elena wanted to reach across the table, take his hand, ask if he still wrote poetry, if he still believed in anything beyond spreadsheets and retirement plans.

Instead, she checked her watch. "Break's over."

"Right." Marcus's eyes dimmed, the zombie mask sliding back into place. "See you around, Elena."

She watched him walk away, another ghost in the machine. Then she picked up her fork, speared a cold leaf of spinach, and forced herself to swallow.

Back at her desk, Elena adjusted her employee hat—metaphorical, but heavy nonetheless. The spinach sat in her stomach like a small, stubborn act of resistance. Tomorrow, she told herself. Tomorrow she'd take off a hat. Tomorrow she'd feel something real.

The zombie in the neighboring cubicle kept typing.
