The Hat Who Ran with Lightning

Mia was a girl who loved storms. While other children hid under blankets when thunder rumbled, Mia pressed her nose against the window, watching the sky dance.

One rainy afternoon, she found an old top hat in her grandmother's attic. It was purple with silver stars stitched around the brim. When Mia put it on, something magical happened — the hat twitched!

"I've been stuck in that attic for fifty years," the hat said in a squeaky voice. "I'm going outside!"

The hat hopped off Mia's head and started running down the street.

"Wait! Come back!" Mia called, running after the hat.

She chased it through puddles and around corners until they reached the park. Suddenly, the sky darkened. Clouds gathered like wooly giants. A lightning bolt flashed across the sky.

The hat trembled. "I've never seen a storm before. It's magnificent!"

Mia caught up to it. "Storms are my favorite," she said, breathing hard from all the running. "Want to watch together?"

The hat settled beside her on a park bench. For an hour, they watched lightning paint the sky in brilliant zigzags.

"You know," the hat said softly, "I ran away because I wanted adventure. But I think friendship is even better."

Mia smiled. "You can have both. Come home with me. We'll have adventures every day."

And that's how Mia found a new friend. They watched storms together, ran through fields, and sometimes, just sometimes, the purple hat would catch a tiny piece of lightning in its brim to keep as a glowing memory.

The best adventures, Mia learned, are the ones you share with a friend.
