The Hat Trick Summer

spinachiphonepoolfoxhat

Marcus adjusted the brim of his vintage snapback, the hat serving as his armor against the terrifying sea of chlorine-soaked teenagers at Jessica's end-of-year blowout. His iPhone buzzed in his pocket — a lifeline to his gaming server and, more importantly, an excuse to avoid actual human interaction.

"Hey! Spinach dip!" someone shouted, and Marcus flinched. That's exactly what he'd been trying to avoid all week — the nickname that followed him since the cafeteria incident when he'd spent twenty minutes lecturing classmates about why canned spinach was actually underrated. Spoiler: it wasn't. The nickname stuck like gorilla glue.

Across the pool, she appeared. Fox. That's what everyone called Isabella, mostly because she was cunning as hell and somehow always three steps ahead of everyone socially. She wore this oversized bucket hat that somehow looked intentional on her, whereas Marcus just felt like he was playing dress-up in his brother's clothes.

His phone pinged again. Discord notification. His crew was asking when he'd escape this social torture chamber. But something about the way Fox laughed — genuinely laughed, not that performative stuff people did at parties — made his feet stay planted.

Marcus took a breath, removed his hat, and actually approached another human being voluntarily. The spinach dip was actually decent. The pool wasn't so terrifying from up close. And maybe, just maybe, Fox's grin wasn't entirely sarcastic when she said, "Finally decided to join the land of the living?"

His iPhone stayed in his pocket. Progress.
