The Hat Trick

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangled in frizzy curls. The humidity had turned her usually cooperative **hair** into a disaster zone, and she was already running late for Tyler's party.

"This is a disaster," she groaned, slumping onto her bed. Barnaby—her orange tabby **cat**—blinked lazily from his pillow perch, completely unimpressed by her teenage crisis.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up. Everyone was already at Tyler's, posting stories and asking where she was. The FOMO was real, but the thought of walking in looking like this? Even worse.

"You just have to **bear** it," she told herself, pushing off the bed. "Own it. It's just a party."

But anxiety had other plans. She could already picture herself standing in the corner, feeling like a total **bull in a china shop** while everyone else was effortlessly cool and casual. This was exactly why she never went to these things.

Then she spotted it: her dad's old vintage **hat** on the coat rack. A black beanie with just enough edge to make everything else intentional. She grabbed it, pulled it low over her disastrous curls, and caught her reflection again.

Actually? She looked kind of... cool. Mysterious, even. The kind of girl who didn't try too hard.

The nervous energy shifted into something else—confidence. She grabbed her backpack, gave Barnaby a quick forehead boop, and headed out the door. Let them wonder. Let them stare. Tonight, she wasn't the girl with bad hair. She was the girl in the hat.
