The Hat Trick

Marcus stood at the plate, the baseball bat feeling like a foreign object in his hands. The varsity coach watched from the dugout, clipboard in hand, while his friend Jamal leaned against the fence, probably livestreaming this disaster to TikTok.

The hat was the problem. Or maybe it was the solution. It was his dad's old fitted cap from the 90s, stained and slightly misshapen, with a logo that was barely visible anymore. Wearing it to tryouts had been Marcus's decision—some weird attempt to channel confidence he didn't actually feel.

"You got this, bro!" Jamal yelled, causing half the team to turn around. Great. Now everyone was looking.

Marcus adjusted the hat, pulling the brim lower. One swing. That's all he needed. Just make contact and nobody would remember he'd nearly tripped running onto the field.

The pitch came—fast, outside corner. He swung anyway. Clean contact. The ball soared past the infield, dropping into shallow center field. First base coach was waving him around, and somehow his legs remembered what to do even though his brain was still processing.

"SAFE!" the umpire shouted.

Marcus skidded to a stop, chest heaving. Jamal was now hopping the fence, phone abandoned, screaming like Marcus had just won the World Series.

"What'd I tell you?" Jamal said, grabbing Marcus by the shoulders. "You're literally Ken Griffey Jr.'s long-lost cousin."

"I was terrified," Marcus admitted, adjusting the hat again.

"That's the game, bro. Everyone's terrified. Some of us just hide it better." Jamal grinned. "That hat though? We need to burn it. My grandma has better taste in headwear."

Marcus laughed, and for the first time all day, the imposter syndrome quieted down. Maybe he didn't need the hat after all. Or maybe the secret was having a friend who'd scream your name even when you were convinced you'd strike out.

Either way, he'd made first base. That counted for something.
