The Hat Trick

spybaseballhat

Maya's vintage Yankees cap sat pulled low over her eyes, her version of going incognito at Riverside High's first baseball scrimmage of the season. She'd never admit it to anyone, but she'd been basically low-key stalking the team from the bleachers for weeks — not in a creepy way, just... observing. Like a spy gathering intel.

"Nice hat," said a voice behind her. Maya jumped, nearly knocking over her lukewarm Gatorade.

Leo. The starting pitcher. The guy whose baseball stats she'd accidentally memorized while 'researching' the team.

"Oh, uh, thanks," she managed, hoping her face wasn't as bright red as it felt. "My dad gave it to me. Before he... yeah."

Smooth, Maya. Real smooth.

But Leo didn't look weirded out. He sat beside her in the empty bleachers, baseball glove dangling from his hand. "You come to a lot of games?"

Maya shrugged, tugging the hat brim lower. "Sometimes. It's peaceful. Before everyone shows up."

"Yeah." Leo pointed at her cap. "Your dad play?"

"College ball," she said, then surprised herself by adding, "He taught me to pitch before he got sick. I can throw a decent curveball."

Leo's eyes lit up. "No way. We need another pitcher for JV. You should try out."

Maya laughed. "Right. Because I definitely look like baseball material."

"Wear the hat," he said seriously. "It's working for you. Plus, we've seen your secret-agent watching skills. That's basically scouting, right?"

She looked at him, really looked at him, and something shifted. The hat wasn't a disguise anymore — it was an invitation.

"Tomorrow," she heard herself say. "I'll be there."

And when she walked onto the field the next day, Leo's Yankees cap pulled tight and her heart hammering against her ribs, Maya realized something: the best disguises aren't the ones that hide you. They're the ones that finally let you be seen.
