The Hat Trick

Maya pulled her snapback down low, trying to disappear into her locker. First day at Ridgeview High, and she'd already managed to trip over her own feet in homeroom. Classic.

"You good?" A voice appeared beside her. Chloe. The girl with the perfect beach waves—those effortless curls that probably took forty minutes and three products to achieve.

Maya's palms were sweating. Again. "Yeah. Just... first day jitters, you know?"

"Totally." Chloe adjusted her own bag. "I saw you in homeroom. Mr. Harrison's class sucks, but you'll get used to it. We should sit together at lunch."

Wait—what?

Maya's fingers instinctively tugged at a strand of her hair. A nervous habit she'd developed somewhere between her parents' divorce and three school transfers in two years. She wasn't used to nice. Nice usually meant "I want something" or "I'm setting you up for something."

The popular group moved through the hallway like they owned the space. Chloe nodded toward them. "That's Ethan's crew. He's been trying to get everyone to go to his party Friday. You should come."

"I don't really... do parties."

"No pressure." Chloe checked her phone. "Speaking of, I've been meaning to ask—what's with the hat? You're always hiding under it."

The casual question hit harder than it should have. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. This was it. The moment where Chloe would reveal she'd been gathering material to humiliate the new girl.

Instead, Chloe just waited. Like she actually wanted to know.

"My hair," Maya finally said. "It's... a lot."

"Can I see?"

Maya hesitated, then slowly removed her hat. Her curly hair sprang free, wild and untamed. She waited for the laugh, the joke.

"Dude," Chloe said. "That's awesome. Why do you hide it?"

"Because it's a lot."

"It's you, though." Chloe grinned. "My cat has better hair than half the people in this school, and she doesn't even try. Own it."

Maya actually laughed. "You have a cat?"

"Her name's Luna. She's basically the reason I haven't dropped out yet. Anyway, about Ethan's party—"

"Why do you keep pushing it?" The words came out sharper than intended. "Is this like, a spy mission? Get the weird new kid to show up so everyone can laugh?"

Chloe's expression shifted. "Whoa. No. I just... I remember being the new girl last year. It's lonely as hell. I'm trying to be nice. That's literally it."

The hallway noise faded. Maya's fingers traced the lines in her palm—something her grandma taught her to do when she was anxious, a silly ritual that somehow made everything feel less impossible.

"Sorry," Maya said. "I'm not great at... people being normal."

"Relatable." Chloe checked the time. "Look, no pressure about the party. But if you change your mind, you won't be the only one there who's scared out of their mind. Most of us are just pretending we know what we're doing."

Maya put her hat back on, but adjusted it differently. Not hiding anymore—just wearing it.

"Maybe," she said. "I'll think about it."

"Cool." Chloe headed to class. "See you around, Hat Girl."

Maya watched her go. For the first time in forever, something about this new place didn't feel completely terrible.
