The Hat, The Pool, The Moment
Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her phone like it was a lifeline. The annual summer blowout at Tyler's house was legendary, and somehow she'd actually been invited. Which was huge. Tyler, with his crooked smile and perfect everything, had actually noticed her existence this semester.
The problem? She couldn't swim. Not even a little. And everyone was already in the water, laughing and splashing like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Hey, you coming in?" Tyler called from the pool, droplets sliding down his abs like something straight out of a movie.
"Maybe later!" Maya called back, her voice cracking. Smooth. Really smooth.
She retreated to the snack table, where Jordan—her ride-or-die since sixth grade—was aggressively examining a spinach dip like it held the secrets of the universe.
"You good?" Jordan asked, raising an eyebrow. "You look like you're about to throw up."
"I can't swim," Maya whispered, feeling her face burn. "And everyone's in the pool. I look ridiculous standing here fully dressed."
"So get in. Who cares if you can't swim? Just stay in the shallow end."
"I—"
Before Maya could finish, her nemesis Chloe floated over, looking like Instagram personified in a designer bikini. "Maya! You're just standing there. Boring."
Something in Maya snapped. She grabbed her favorite oversized **hat** from the snack table—she'd brought it for protection against the sun, not social assault—and jammed it on her head.
"Actually," Maya said, her voice steadier than she felt, "I was just about to make an entrance."
She marched to the pool's edge, hat pulled low, and jumped.
The moment her body hit the water, she realized two things: first, the shallow end was only three feet deep, and second, she could actually touch the bottom. But more importantly, she'd done it. She'd jumped.
Resurfacing with a splutter, she found Tyler watching her, grinning. "Finally. Took you long enough."
Maya flipped her wet hair out of her face, hat somehow still clinging to her head like a crown. "I had to make an entrance."
"Well," Chloe said from deeper in the water, looking unexpectedly impressed, "that was actually kind of epic."
Later, as the sun dipped and everyone huddled around snacks, Maya caught Tyler watching her laugh at Jordan's terrible joke. For the first time all summer, she felt like she was exactly where she was supposed to be. And it only took a jump into the unknown to get there.
