The Hat, The Phone, The Dive

Maya pulled the brim of her dad's vintage fishing hat lower, turning herself into a turtle in a shell. The party noise washed over her—laughter, splashing, bass thumping from somewhere. She gripped her iPhone like it was her only oxygen, thumb scrolling through Instagram stories of people having way more fun than she was.

"You gonna stand there all night looking mysterious, or you gonna actually jump in?"

Maya looked up. It was Tyler from AP Bio, wearing swim trunks and zero shirt, and why was the sun still out at 9 PM?

She shrugged. "Just observing."

"Cool hat," he said, but his tone said the opposite. "It's giving... mystery novelist who hasn't left their house in three years."

Maya's face burned. She yanked the hat off, frizzy hair exploding everywhere. "It's my dad's, okay? I forgot my snapback."

Tyler laughed—not mean, just amused. "Wanna play chicken fight? Leah needs a partner."

Before Maya could process, three girls were screaming her name. Leah, queen of everything, was already climbing onto some guy's shoulders in the pool.

"Yes! Maya, get in here!"

Maya's heart hammered. She clutched her iPhone tighter. "I can't, my phone—"

"Throw it on the chair!" Tyler already had her wrist. "Live a little, mystery novelist."

The next thing Maya knew, she was in the pool. Cool water swallowed her whole, electric and shocking. She surfaced sputtering, laughing actually laughing, and somewhere in the chaos, her hat floated away like a tiny boat. She watched it drift toward the deep end and decided to let it go.

"CHICKEN FIGHT!" someone screamed.

Maya found herself on Tyler's shoulders, Leah on some sophomore's, and they were charging at each other like gladiators. Maya's hands pushed Leah's shoulders—she wasn't strong, but she was stubborn—and suddenly they were both toppling backward.

Water rushed into her nose, her mouth, her ears. She kicked upward, breaking the surface gasping, and everyone was cheering.

"YOU BEAT LEAH!" someone shouted. "No one beats Leah!"

Maya wiped her eyes, grinning so hard her face hurt. Her iPhone sat on a lounge chair, dry and untouched. Her hat was doing laps around the pool. And she was surrounded by people who were actually looking at her, really seeing her, no shell required.

"Again?" Tyler asked, splashing water in her direction.

"Again," Maya said. And this time, she didn't reach for anything to hide behind.
