The Hat, The Hair, The Dog
Maya's curls were doing that thing again—half-frizz, half-definition, exactly zero control. She'd spent forty-five minutes with the diffuser, but her hair had other plans.
"You're not wearing that, are you?" Jordan leaned against her doorframe, scrolling TikTok.
"It's fine."
"Maya, it's literally the first party of junior year. You cannot show up looking like you just woke up."
She grabbed the beanie off her dresser—the oversized black one she'd stolen from her brother's closet last year. It swallowed her hair completely. Perfect.
The party was already lit when they arrived. Everyone from AP Bio was there, plus half the soccer team, and somehow Maya's stomach did that nervous flip-flop thing even though she'd been to parties before. Just not *this* party.
Then she saw him.
Caleb. New guy. Cute in that way where he didn't know he was cute, which made him cuter.
Maya immediately regretted everything—her outfit, her hair hidden under the hat, the fact that she was standing in the corner holding a solo cup of flat soda like some kind of socially anxious monument to awkwardness.
"Hey."
She jumped, spilling soda on her sneakers. Caleb.
"Hey, um, hi."
"You're Maya, right? From English?"
She nodded, forgetting how words worked.
"Cool. I like your hat."
Something brushed against her leg. A dog—a golden retriever, confused but determined—had followed some random girl inside and was now weaving through the crowd like it owned the place.
The dog's tail knocked into Maya's ankle. She stumbled. The beanie slipped off.
Her hair EXPLODED outward. The curls she'd been trying to tame all afternoon sprang free like they'd been waiting sixteen years for liberation.
Caleb didn't laugh. He just watched, eyes soft.
"Whoa. Your hair is actually really cool."
The dog sat next to her and wagged its tail like it had just accomplished something major.
"Yeah," Maya said, not even trying to fix it. "Yeah, it kinda is."
