The Hat, The Cat, The Crush

Maya's black beanie was basically part of her skull at this point. Through three years of high school, it had become her personality — low-key mysterious, vaguely artistic, definitely not the girl who'd actually talk to you. She was the observer, the quiet one in the back, the human equivalent of a loading icon.

Then there was the cat situation. Barnaby — her grandma's fat orange tabby who'd somehow become Maya's emotional support animal — had developed a bizarre hobby. Every day at exactly 3:45 PM, he'd sprint to the windowsill and stare, absolutely transfixed, at something across the street. Maya had caught herself doing it too. That's when she noticed him.

The guy. The one who always walked past right when Barnaby went full spy mode. Messy dark hair, headphones perpetually around his neck, carrying a skateboard like it was an extension of his arm. He was everything Maya wasn't — confident, loud in that good way, the kind of person who just existed without apologizing for it.

She'd become a professional low-key creeper. Window timing, sidewalk coincidences, accidentally walking behind him to school (okay, maybe three times). It wasn't weird if you didn't think about it too hard.

Until the day Barnaby made his move. The cat shot across the room, somehow opened the window screen (Maya would never understand how), and bolted outside. By the time Maya's brain processed what was happening, Barnaby was already running full sprint toward the guy.

And her hat. Her iconic, never-comes-off beanie was on the floor.

She grabbed it and sprinted after the cat, her heart doing that weird flutter thing that had nothing to do with running. "BARNABY!" she yelled, which was humiliating.

The guy stopped. The cat immediately started rubbing against his legs like they were best friends. And Maya skidded to a halt, hat in hand, breathless, face the color of a stop sign.

"Your cat?" He grinned, and it was better than it had any right to be.

"He's... not usually like this." Maya's voice came out weird. "I'm so sorry, he's basically an escaped convict, I don't know what's wrong with him —"

"Dude, chill." The guy scooped up Barnaby like he weighed nothing. "I'm Marcus. We've gotta stop meeting like this."

Maya stared. "Like... this?"

"You literally walk behind me to school like three times a week." Marcus raised his eyebrows. "I've been waiting for you to say hi."

Maya's brain short-circuited. She'd been the spy all along, and she hadn't even been good at it.

"Oh my god," she whispered.

"Yeah. Pretty much." Marcus handed over Barnaby, who looked suspiciously pleased with himself. "Hey, you wanna grab boba? I know this place —"

"Yes," Maya said immediately. Then, "I mean, yeah, sure."

She pulled on her beanie, but it felt different now. Less like armor, more like... just a hat. Barnaby purred in her arms like the absolute legend he was. And Maya walked down the street next to Marcus, already planning exactly how she'd text her best friend about this later.

The cat had been the wingman she didn't know she needed. High key legendary behavior.
