The Hat That Swam

Lily stood at the edge of Bluebell Pond, her toes wiggling in the cool mud. Everyone else was already swimming, laughing and splashing in the shimmering water. But Lily stayed on shore.

She patted her curly red hair nervously. What if she sank? What if the fish laughed at her?

"Come in, Lily!" called her friend Finn, treading water. "It's wonderful!"

Lily shook her head. She couldn't.

Then something extraordinary happened. A small blue hat came floating across the pond — not blowing in the wind, but swimming! It moved through the water like a little boat, leaving tiny ripples behind.

Lily gasped. The hat swam right to her feet and hopped onto the grass.

"Put me on," said a tiny, cheerful voice from inside the hat.

Lily picked up the hat. It was made of soft blue fabric with a silver star on the front. When she placed it on her head, she felt suddenly warm and brave, like she'd swallowed sunshine.

"I'm the Courage Cap," the hat explained. "I've been swimming around for three hundred years, looking for someone who needs me."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You've been swimming for that long?"

"I've swum in every ocean, every river, every pond," the hat said proudly. "And I've never sunk once. With me on your head, you won't either."

Lily took a deep breath. She believed the hat.

Hand in hand with Finn, she stepped into the pond. The water tickled her ankles, then her knees. When it reached her waist, she paused. The hat gave her a little squeeze, like a hug.

She pushed off the bottom.

And she didn't sink. She floated!

All afternoon, Lily swam with her friends. She dove like a frog, raced like a fish, and discovered she loved the way the water held her like a gentle hug.

When it was time to leave, the blue hat slipped from her head.

"My work is done," it said. "You don't need me anymore."

"But I'll miss you!" Lily cried.

"You won't," the hat promised. "Because now you know the truth."

"What truth?"

"That you were always brave enough. The magic wasn't in me — it was in you all along."

The hat dove into the water and swam away, searching for the next child who needed it.

Lily touched her wet hair and smiled. She couldn't wait for tomorrow, when she could go swimming again — all by herself.
