The Hat That Saw True Friends

Leo loved his grandmother's attic. It smelled like sunshine and old stories. One rainy afternoon, he found something tucked behind a dusty trunk — an enormous straw hat with a bright blue ribbon.

"It was your great-grandfather's," Grandma said, smiling. "He said it had magic."

Leo put on the hat. It was too big, sliding down over his ears. He ran to the pool behind the house, the one with lily pads and little green frogs.

But when he looked at his reflection, something strange happened. The water shimmered like silver, and instead of his own face, Leo saw something else — a great brown bull with the kindest eyes he had ever seen.

The bull was standing beside a papaya tree, its branches heavy with golden fruit. The bull wasn't scary at all. It was guarding the tree, protecting it from something Leo couldn't see.

"Hello?" Leo whispered.

To his surprise, the bull looked up, as if it had heard him. The water rippled, and suddenly Leo wasn't standing by the pool anymore. He was standing beside the papaya tree, and the great bull was nuzzling his hand with its soft nose.

"You're my friend," Leo said, and the bull nodded.

The bull showed Leo the sweetest papaya he had ever tasted. It tasted like sunshine and magic. But when Leo reached for another one, the bull gently shook its head.

"This papaya is for someone who needs it," Leo understood. "Not for us."

The bull nodded again. Together, they carried the papaya through the shimmering pool back to Leo's world. His grandmother was waiting. Her eyes filled with tears when she saw the fruit.

"I haven't tasted papaya since I was a little girl," she said. "How did you know?"

Leo touched his big straw hat. "A friend showed me."

From that day on, Leo visited his friend the bull whenever he wore the magic hat. He learned that the best papayas aren't the ones you keep for yourself, but the ones you share. And that friends come in all shapes and sizes — even if they happen to be great, gentle bulls who live in a magic pool behind your house.
