The Hat That Saved My Summer

Maya clutched the brim of her dad's vintage fedora like it was a life raft. The hat smelled like old books and cedar chest, completely out of place at Tyler's end-of-summer pool party. But she needed it. Needed to hide the frizzy hair she'd spent two hours trying to tame, needed to shield her eyes from everyone staring at the girl who'd show up to a pool party in jeans.

"You coming in or what?" Tyler called from the diving board, surrounded by his loud, confident friends. The ones who moved through life like they were swimming in air while Maya felt like she was constantly underwater.

Before she could answer, a golden retriever came tearing around the corner, leash trailing behind it. It spotted Maya's hat and lunged.

"No! Buster!" his owner Chase yelled from the patio. But the dog had already snatched the fedora and taken off running.

Maya chased after him without thinking. The dog splashed into the pool, hat clamped in his jaws, and suddenly Maya was ankle-deep in the water, her soaked jeans heavy as lead. Everyone was staring. Tyler. His friends. Chase, still running over.

"I am so sorry," Chase said, reaching for the dog. "Buster, drop it."

The dog let go of the hat. It floated to the surface, ruined. Completely and utterly waterlogged.

Maya looked at her reflection in the pool. Hair wild, clothes soaked, dignity gone. And then she started laughing. Couldn't stop. Because somehow, this ridiculous dog had done what she couldn't — forced her to stop hiding.

"Nice hat," Chase said, grinning as he fished it out. "Want to go swimming for real this time?"

"Yeah," Maya said, kicking off her squelching sneakers. "Yeah, I think I do."

The fedora dried crooked. She never wore it again. But she kept it on her shelf anyway, a reminder that sometimes you have to let the dog steal your armor before you can learn to swim.
