The Hat That Saved Me
I felt like a total zombie walking into first period, my brain still fuzzy from staying up until 2 AM finishing that history paper. Junior year was absolutely destroying me, and I was barely surviving.
Then I saw HER—Maya Chen, wearing MY vintage adidas bucket hat. The one I'd left at that party last weekend. The one my grandma gave me before she passed away. And she was rocking it, looking all effortless and cool while I looked like a walking corpse.
My heart started racing. This was it—the perfect excuse to finally talk to her, something I'd been obsessing over since homecoming. But the second our eyes met, I literally started running. Not figuratively—actually sprinting down the hallway like my life depended on it.
'HEY! ZOMBIE BOY!' she yelled, chasing after me.
I stopped at my locker, face burning. 'That's... not my name.'
Maya caught up, barely winded, grinning. 'I know. I'm Maya. And this is your hat, isn't it?'
She pulled it off and handed it to me, her fingers brushing mine. 'I was hoping you'd notice. Wanted to see if you'd actually say something or just keep staring at me from across the cafeteria like you've been doing all semester.'
I almost died. She'd NOTICED me noticing her? 'I... uh...'
'You're cute when you panic,' she said. 'Wear the hat tomorrow. It suits you.'
She walked away, leaving me there, still feeling like a zombie but in the best way possible. Maybe junior year wouldn't completely suck after all.
