The Hat That Saved Friday Night

The party was already bumping when Maya arrived, three hours late because she'd spent two hours spiral-curling her hair only for it to frizz up like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Hence the beanie — pulled low enough to hide the disaster but not so low that she looked like she was robbing the place.

"Maya! Finally!" Sarah yelled over the music, grabbing her hand. "Come meet everyone!"

Maya's palm was already sweating against the red solo cup. Why did she agree to this? She'd been running scenarios all week: what if everyone thought she was weird? What if she said something awkward? What if, what if, what if.

"Hey, you're in my AP Lit class," someone said. A guy with messy dark hair and an easy grin. Tyler.

"Yeah," Maya managed. "Lit. Great class."

Smooth. She was absolutely crushing it.

Then she felt it — cold nose against her hand. A massive golden retriever had materialized from nowhere, tail wagging like it had personal business with everyone in the room.

"That's Buster," Tyler laughed. "He thinks he's the host."

Buster decided Maya was his person. He sat squarely on her feet and looked up with eyes that said, I have judged you, and you are acceptable. Maya's anxiety melted as she buried her hands in his fur, forgetting entirely about her hair.

"He likes you," Tyler said, sitting down beside her. "He's a good judge of character."

"Better than me," Maya admitted. "I was literally planning to run out five minutes ago."

"Same," Tyler said. "This party's chaos. Want to go look at the stars? The roof's actually pretty chill."

Buster followed them up, and for the first time all night, Maya's palm stopped sweating. She pulled off her hat and let the frizzy hair do whatever it wanted. Turns out, coming-of-age moments didn't always happen in dramatic flashes. Sometimes they happened quietly on a roof with a boy who got nervous too and a dog who made everything less scary.
