The Hat That Saved Everything

bullhairhatcable

My hair looked like a **cable** had exploded on my head. Frizz everywhere. I'd spent two hours straightening it for Jordan's party, and the humidity had other plans.

"You're not actually wearing that, are you?" My little brother Leo leaned against my door frame, looking annoyingly unbothered.

"Yes, Leo, I am." I tugged my favorite beanie down, covering the disaster. "It's called fashion."

"It's called I'm-embarrassed-to-be-seen-with-you." He dodged the pillow I threw.

The real problem wasn't the hat. It was that I'd told everyone I was going full natural tonight. My hair was supposed to look effortless. I'd been talking **bull** all week about how I was finally confident enough to go without my usual armor.

At the party, the air was thick with cheap cologne and nervous energy. I spotted Jordan by the speakers, and—yup—there was Tyler. My stomach did that stupid flippy thing it always did when he was around.

Then the power went out. Someone tripped over the heavy **cable** running to the DJ setup, and suddenly we were in darkness.

"Everyone chill!" Jordan's voice cut through the groans. "I've got flashlights."

I ended up squished between Tyler and the kitchen island while Jordan fumbled with circuits. My hat was getting sweaty. I needed air.

I slipped outside to the porch, and—of course—Tyler followed.

"Nice hat," he said, and I couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic.

"It's covering a crime scene," I admitted, tugging it off. My hair sprang out in every direction. "I accidentally dyed it orange last month, and now it's just... this."

Tyler stared. Then he laughed. Not mean laughing. Real laughing.

"No way. I did the exact same thing in eighth grade." He pulled up his phone, scrolling through ancient photos. "My mom wouldn't let me leave the house for a week."

His hair had been a neon disaster.

"Why didn't you ever tell anyone?"

"Are you kidding? I have a reputation."

"What reputation?" I said. "You're Tyler. The perfect guy who never messes up."

"That's the biggest **bull** I've ever heard," he said, and suddenly he wasn't untouchable Tyler anymore. He was just a guy who'd had terrible hair and tried to hide it.

We stayed on that porch for an hour, trading stories about our most embarrassing moments. The party raged inside, but I didn't care. My hair was still a disaster. My hat was inside somewhere. But for the first time all night, I wasn't faking anything.

"You should wear the hat more often," Tyler said as the lights finally flickered back on. "It's got vibe."

"Vibe?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Okay, fine. It's got... personality."

I smiled. "I'll take it."
