The Hat That Rode Lightning

Lily found the hat in her grandmother's attic. It was purple with silver stars that seemed to twinkle even in the dusty shadows. When she put it on, something magical happened—the hat squeezed her head gently, like a hug.

"Whatcha doing?" a voice squeaked.

Lily jumped. A tiny creature made of actual lightning crackled on her shoulder. He had a lightning bolt tail and eyes like flashlights.

"I'm Spark!" he said, doing a flip. "Want to go swimming?"

"Swimming? But it's not even summer yet!" Lily laughed.

"Not that kind of swimming," Spark grinned. "Star swimming!"

He grabbed her hand—or tried, since his fingers were made of crackling electricity—and suddenly Lily wasn't in the attic anymore. She was floating in the sky, surrounded by stars that sparkled like diamonds spilled on black velvet.

"Hold on!" Spark called, morphing into a glowing cable of pure light. "Grab me!"

Lily wrapped her hands around the lightning cable, and WHOOSH! They zoomed through constellations, past planets that looked like giant colorful marbles. She wasn't scared. She was with her new friend, and friendship makes anything brave.

They went swimming through nebulas that tasted like strawberry cotton candy. They met a family of star-whales who sang songs that made Lily's heart feel warm and fizzy. But soon, Lily noticed something sad.

"What's wrong?" she asked Spark.

"That lonely star over there," Spark pointed. "Nobody ever visits her."

Lily knew exactly what to do. She took off her magical hat and placed it on the lonely star. Instantly, the star began to glow brighter, spinning happily.

"Everyone needs a friend," Lily said. "Even stars."

When Lily returned to her attic, the star-shaped burn mark on her palm still glowed softly. She wasn't just a girl who found a hat anymore. She was a guardian of lonely stars, a swimmer of galaxies, a friend to the lightning.

And every storm after that, when lightning flashed across the sky, Lily would wave. Because somewhere out there, Spark was waving back, ready for their next adventure.
