The Hat That Hid Everything
Marcus stood at the edge of the swimming pool, clutching his iPhone like a lifeline. The screen displayed three unread texts from Chloe asking where he was, and his thumb hovered over the keyboard, typing and deleting excuses like he was playing some guilty version of Wordle.
Pulling his baseball cap lower, Marcus scanned the pool party. His hat was his armor—worn backward, rim bent just right like Jacob's from third period. It was stupid, really, how a piece of fabric could make you feel like you actually belonged somewhere.
"Yo Marcus, you gonna stand there all day or what?" Tyler yelled from the diving board, doing something stupid with his arms that definitely wasn't an actual dive. Tyler, whose Instagram story was already a fifteen-second montage of himself cannonballing.
The hat slipped. Just a fraction. Marcus caught it, heart hammering like he'd just been caught sneaking back past curfew. Because under the cap, his hair was gone—all buzzed off two days ago when his mom found that patch he'd been hiding with strategic styling since January. And now here he was, at the biggest party of summer, looking like a damn thumb.
His iPhone buzzed again. Snap from Chloe. Probably already here, probably wondering why he was being weird.
Something shifted inside Marcus. Not confidence, exactly—more like surrender. He ripped off his hat and tossed it onto a lawn chair, where it landed like a defeated bird. The cool air hit his buzz cut, and for three seconds, nobody noticed. Then they did. Then they didn't care, because apparently nobody at this party had ever spent more than ten seconds thinking about Marcus's hair except Marcus.
He dove in.
The water was shockingly cold, swallowing him in blue silence, and for a moment everything was muffled and weightless and simple. When he broke the surface, Chloe was standing poolside, iPhone in hand, grinning like she'd just won something.
"Finally," she said. "You missed the group photo. Again."
