The Hat That Fixed Everything

Leo sat on the sidewalk with his dad's old iphone, tears dripping onto his sneakers. The screen was dark, and no matter what buttons he pressed, it wouldn't turn on. A charging cable lay snapped beside him.

"What's wrong, little friend?" a squeaky voice asked.

Leo looked up to see a small, green figure shuffling toward him. It had messy hair, one shoe untied, and moved like it was half-asleep. A zombie! But this zombie didn't look scary at all—he looked confused and a little sad.

"I'm Zed," the zombie said, sitting down with a soft bump. "I'm the world's worst zombie. I keep forgetting to moan and stumble properly. Zombie School is sending me home tomorrow."

Leo wiped his eyes. "My dad's iphone is broken. It was his favorite, and now he's deployed overseas. We video chatted every day."

Zed's eyes widened. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a bright purple hat. It had gold stars embroidered all over it.

"This is my lucky hat," Zed said. "My grandma made it before she… well, before she became a zombie too. She said it can fix anything if you use it with kindness."

Leo's eyes sparkled. "Your grandma sounds wonderful. What if we tie the hat around the broken cable? Maybe the magic will flow through!"

Together, they wrapped the purple hat around the cable's broken ends. Leo closed his eyes and whispered, "Please work. I just want to say goodnight to Dad."

The stars on the hat began to glow. A warm, sweet smell filled the air—like cookies and sunshine. The cable hummed with golden light, knitting itself together!

Leo plugged in the iphone. The screen flickered, then burst to life with his dad's contact photo.

"You did it!" Zed danced, actually dancing! "Maybe I'm not such a bad zombie after all!"

Leo video called his dad immediately. When they hung up, he took off the hat and placed it on Zed's head.

"Keep it," Leo said. "You're not the world's worst zombie. You're the world's best friend."

That night, Zed walked tall, the purple hat shining like a crown. And somewhere far away, Leo's dad wondered why his iphone smelled like magic and cookies.
