The Hat That Dreamed of Oceans
Ruby loved her old blue hat. It had a floppy brim and a little red ribbon. But most of all, Ruby loved that her dog, Barnaby, would bark and wiggle every time she wore it.
"Arf! Arf!" Barnaby would say, dancing on his hind legs. Ruby was sure her hat made him extra happy.
One hot afternoon, Ruby and her mom went to the community pool for swimming lessons. Ruby wasn't the best swimmer yet. The water looked big and deep, and her tummy felt fluttery.
"I don't want to go," Ruby whispered, hiding behind her mom.
But then she felt something wet on her hand. Barnaby had snuck into the pool area! He licked her face, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled.
Ruby put on her blue hat. Barnaby barked, "ARF!" and suddenly, the pool didn't look so scary.
"Ruby, it's your turn!" called her teacher, Miss Lily.
Ruby took a deep breath. She remembered how brave Barnaby was when he met the neighbor's big cat. She adjusted her hat and jumped in.
Splash!
The water was cool and sparkly. Ruby kicked her legs and moved her arms. At first, she sank a little. But then she imagined she was a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom.
Barnaby sat by the edge of the pool, watching her. Ruby waved, and he dipped his paw in the water.
After swimming, Ruby's mom took her to their favorite restaurant for dinner. "What would you like, sweetie?"
"Spinach!" Ruby said.
Her mom laughed. "Spinach? You used to hate spinach."
"I know," Ruby said, "but today I was swimming so much, and now I feel strong like a superhero. Superheroes eat spinach!"
When the green, leafy spinach arrived, Ruby tried it. It wasn't bad at all. In fact, it tasted like adventure.
Barnaby sat under the table, hoping for a treat. Ruby sneaked him a tiny piece of spinach. He gobbled it up and did a happy spin.
That night, Ruby hung her blue hat on her bedpost. "Thank you for making me brave," she whispered.
Barnaby curled up at the foot of her bed, dreaming of swimming and spinach treats.
Ruby learned something wonderful that day: sometimes the scariest things become the most fun adventures. And with a little imagination, a loyal dog, and a lucky hat, anything was possible.
