The Hat That Dreamed in Orange

Luna found the hat in her grandmother's attic, tucked inside an old trunk that smelled of cinnamon and secrets. It was purple and floppy, with a star-shaped button on the brim.

"What are you?" Luna whispered, turning it over in her hands.

The hat twitched.

Luna gasped and nearly dropped it. The hat wriggled again, then stretched itself over her head. It fit perfectly—warm and cozy, like a hug from someone who loved her very much.

She ran downstairs to the kitchen, still wearing the magical hat. Her mother had left a bowl of fruit on the table. Luna reached for an orange, her favorite afternoon snack.

As her fingers touched the dimpled skin, the hat began to glow. Soft purple light swirled around her. The orange in her hand grew warm, then hot, then brilliant gold.

"Whoa!" Luna breathed.

The orange transformed. It grew larger and larger until it was bigger than Luna herself. Its segments unfolded like petals, revealing something inside—not fruit, but a glowing pyramid made of light.

"Step inside," whispered a voice. It came from the hat.

Luna climbed through the orange petals and into the pyramid. Inside, everything was shimmering and bright. She wasn't alone.

A girl about her age sat in the center, drawing pictures in the air with her finger. Wherever she drew, rainbow trails lingered.

"I'm Opal," said the girl. "I've been waiting for someone with enough imagination to find this place."

"This is amazing!" Luna exclaimed. "But why are you here alone?"

Opal looked down. "Because I forgot how to share. I built this pyramid to keep all the magic for myself. But magic isn't fun when you keep it to yourself."

Luna thought about this. "My grandmother says the best things get better when you give them away. Like love—and orange slices."

Opal smiled, and the pyramid brightened. "Will you come back? And bring friends?"

"Every day," Luna promised. "And I'll bring my brother, and my cousin, and—"

The hat glowed again, and suddenly Luna was back in her kitchen. The orange was normal-sized in her hand. The purple hat still sat on her head, warm and wiggling with delight.

Luna peeled the orange and divided it into perfect sections. She ran to find her brother.

"Sam!" she called. "You won't believe what I found!"

And somewhere, deep in the space between imagination and dreams, a pyramid of light grew a little bigger, waiting for more friends to discover its magic.
