The Hat That Changed Everything
Marcus adjusted the neon green fedora on his head, knowing he looked like a complete tool. But his sister Jenna had dared him—wear this ridiculous hat to school all day, or admit he was too scared to talk to Skyler at lunch.
"You've got this," he whispered to himself, pushing through the cafeteria doors.
Thirty minutes later, Marcus wanted to disappear. The hat had attracted way too much attention. People were definitely filming this for TikTok. And when he'd finally worked up the nerve to approach Skyler's table, his hands were so sweaty he'd nearly dropped his tray.
Then disaster struck. Someone bumped into him, and his lunch—featuring his mom's latest healthy kick, a spinach and mango smoothie—splashed everywhere. All over his white shirt. All over the floor.
Skyler stared at him, wide-eyed.
"Smooth," she said, and Marcus's face burned hotter than a thousand suns.
He bolted, abandoning his tray and whatever was left of his dignity. Outside, behind the gym, he yanked off the stupid hat and threw it at the concrete.
"Hey."
Marcus jumped. Skyler stood there, peeling an orange.
"That was kind of legendary, actually," she said, popping a wedge into her mouth. "In a bad way. But legendary."
Marcus groaned. "I'm never showing my face again."
"You know what my most embarrassing moment was?" She stepped closer, offering him a piece of orange. "Last year, I gave a presentation with my skirt tucked into my underwear. Whole class saw my Spider-Man boxers."
Marcus blinked. Then he started laughing. He couldn't stop.
"See?" Skyler grinned. "We're all out here being awkward together." She reached out and took the hat from the ground, dusting it off. "Besides, this hat? It's giving main character energy."
"It's giving I lost a bet to my sister."
"Same difference." Skyler placed the hat back on his head, adjusting the brim. "Wear it tomorrow too. I dare you."
Marcus looked at her—really looked at her—and realized something. The hat wasn't the problem. His fear of being seen, of being imperfect, was. And somehow, through a spinach smoothie disaster and the worst accessory decision of his life, he'd found someone who didn't just tolerate the awkwardness—she celebrated it.
"Only if you sit with me," he said.
Skyler's smile was brighter than her orange hair. "Deal."
