The Hat That Changed Everything

Maya pulled her dad's ratty old **hat** down over her ears, trying to disappear into the bleachers. The first football game of sophomore year and she was already regretting coming. Her best friend Chloe had ditched her for the popular crowd, leaving Maya alone with her overpriced hot chocolate and social anxiety.

Then the sky exploded.

**Lightning** cracked across the horizon like someone had ripped the atmosphere apart. The game halted. Everyone screamed and ran for cover. Maya didn't move. She watched a sleek black **cat** dart from the concession stand, leaping over empty seats like it owned the world.

Something about the cat's fearlessness hit her different. Since when did she let people dictate her life? Since when did she hide under hats just to avoid being seen?

"You gonna stay out here?" A voice behind her made her jump. Jake, the quiet guy from her English class, stood there dripping wet. "There's covering under the band room."

Maya hesitated, then something shifted inside. Maybe it was the storm, maybe it was seeing that cat embrace the chaos instead of running from it. She pulled off the hat.

"Yeah," she said, surprised by her own confidence. "Let's go."

They ran through the downpour together, both of them laughing like idiots. Under the band room overhang, Jake shook water from his hair like a **bear** coming out of a river.

"You know," he said, catching his breath, "I've always wanted to talk to you in English. You always have the best analyses."

Maya felt something unlock in her chest. This whole time, she'd been so focused on Chloe and the popular crowd, she hadn't noticed someone actually seeing her.

"Same," she admitted. "I like how you question everything Mrs. Peterson says."

The storm raged on, but Maya didn't care. She wasn't hiding anymore. Sometimes it takes getting caught in the rain to realize you don't need an umbrella – you just need the right person to get soaked with.
