The Hat That Changed Everything

Leo pulled the snapback lower, bill facing backward like the cool kids did. His heart raced as he approached the padel courts. Freshman year, and he'd finally worked up the courage to join the club everyone talked about.

"You're up, new kid," shouted Marcus, a junior whose Instagram had more followers than the entire freshman class combined.

Leo's earbuds disconnected—damn, the charging cable was frayed again. He shoved them in his pocket, suddenly hyper-aware of his awkward stance. Everyone watching. His mom's voice echoed in his head: "Just take that vitamin B complex, honey, it'll help with energy!" Yeah, right. Like supplements could fix social anxiety.

The game started. Leo missed the first ball. Then the second. Someone snickered. He adjusted his hat, fingers grazing the sweatband.

"Dude, your hat's on wrong," Marcus called out, laughing. "Bills forward, like this." He demonstrated.

The group went quiet. This was it—the moment Leo became "that weird freshman" forever.

Instead of shrinking, Leo flipped his hat around. Forward. Then backward again.

"Actually," he said, voice steadier than he felt, "I'm starting a trend. Reverse visor for maximum peripheral vision. It's science."

Marcus blinked. Then burst out laughing—but not mean laughing. "Okay, that's actually valid."

They played another round. Leo still wasn't great at padel, but something shifted. He wasn't hiding anymore. Later, sitting on the bench with a Gatorade, Marcus fist-bumped him. "Same time Tuesday, reverse-visor king?"

Leo grinned, hat still backward. "Bet."

That night, he tossed the vitamin bottle in his drawer. Some things you can't supplement. Some things you just have to live through—one awkward game at a time.
