The Hat That Changed Everything
Leo was afraid of many things. Thunder made him hide under his blanket. The neighbor's bull made him run behind the nearest tree. But mostly, he was afraid of being lonely.
His only friend was Finny, a tiny goldfish who swam in circles in a bowl on Leo's nightstand. Sometimes Leo imagined Finny was actually a magical fish prince, trapped in a small glass castle.
One rainy afternoon, Grandma climbed up to the attic and came down with a dusty box. Inside was a deep blue hat with silver stars around the brim.
"This was your grandpa's magic hat," Grandma winked. "He said it only works for the bravest hearts."
Leo put on the hat. It felt warm, like sunlight on a summer day. That night, lightning flashed across the sky. CRACK! BOOM! Leo usually hid, but something about the hat made him feel different.
He looked at Finny. The goldfish was jumping—actually JUMPING—out of his bowl! With each wiggle, Finny grew bigger and bigger until he was the size of a pillow, floating in the air like a balloon.
"Leo!" Finny said in a bubbly voice. "The hat is magic! Quick, follow me!"
Finny swam through the rainy air, and Leo—wearing his magic hat—ran after him. They went all the way to the neighbor's field, where a big bull stood alone in the rain.
Leo was scared, but the hat glowed warmly. Finny nudged him forward.
The bull looked at Leo with big, sad eyes. "I'm not scary," the bull said softly. "I'm just lonely too. Everyone runs away from me."
Leo's heart went out to the big creature. He took off his magic hat and placed it gently on the bull's massive head. The hat glowed golden.
"You're my friend now," Leo smiled.
The bull's eyes brightened. He lowered his giant head so Leo could pet his velvet nose. Finny did a happy flip in the rain.
They learned that night that the real magic wasn't the hat at all. The magic was inside Leo's brave heart all along.
Sometimes, when thunder rumbles, Leo and Finny visit their friend the bull. And Leo is never afraid of storms anymore—because the best friends are found on the other side of fear.
