The Hat That Changed Everything

Jordan pulled the beanie down until it practically swallowed their eyebrows. It was supposed to be their armor—a cozy cable-knit shield against the terrifying reality of starting at a new school halfway through sophomore year. The hat had cost three weeks of allowance money, but Jordan figured invisible was better than visible and awkward.

"You're gonna overheat in there," said Riley, sliding into the seat beside them in homeroom. Riley with their perfectly messy hair and effortless vintage tees, the kind of person who made friends like they were collecting Pokémon cards. "We're not exactly in the Arctic."

Jordan tugged the hat's brim even lower. "I'm cold."

"Right. Cold." Riley's voice carried that knowing tone that made Jordan feel transparent as glass. "Hey, are you gonna come to the gaming club after school? We need someone who actually knows how to play Overwatch instead of just talking about it."

Jordan hesitated. The old them would've said yes in a heartbeat. The new, anxious, hat-wearing them wasn't so sure.

"I... I don't know."

"Come on." Riley grinned. "Ethan said he'd bring his Nintendo Switch. We can play Smash in the library until the librarian inevitably yells at us. It's a time-honored tradition."

The thought of spending hours with potential new friends made Jordan's stomach do nervous gymnastics. But then again, wasn't that the whole point of being brave? Slowly, carefully, Jordan pushed back the cable-knit hat.

"Only if you have an extra controller," they said, and Riley's answering smile felt like the first real warmth since Jordan had moved here.

Three months later, the hat still lived in Jordan's backpack—but mostly as a backup plan. Some days you didn't need armor when you had people who'd save you a seat at lunch, who'd text you memes at 11 PM when you couldn't sleep, who'd somehow become the kind of friend who made you want to be seen instead of hidden.
